Dying man battles with bank over life insurance

A dying father of two has found himself locked in a battle with his bank over his life insurance policy.

Cancer sufferer Stuart Simpson needs his $200,000 payout to make sure his family still has a home to live in after he has gone.

Stuart was diagnosed with terminal cancer four weeks ago.

“When Stace and I got married, I made a commitment I’d look after her,” he said.

“I’ve got two beautiful young kids and if I can't be there, I've got to know at least financially, that they're going to be looked after.”

Yesterday when Stuart called the Commonwealth Bank, he received more bad news.

“They weren't going to honour the life insurance policy, I said, ‘I've been with you 17 years’,” Stuart said.

When he purchased a new home in January, before being diagnosed with stage four melanoma, he started a new life insurance policy.

“They said, ‘you've got to be healthy for 90 days before the insurance policy is affective’… they're saying because it's a pre-existing condition, you don't qualify for it.”

The father of two contacted the media.

“I just cant have bullies like big banks try to say, ‘sorry mate, there's a 90 day clause there, can't look after your family’,” Stuart said.

Today the Commonwealth Bank apologised and told 7News they will process Stuart's $202,000 claim when they receive it as a matter of priority.

Stuart said the bank confirmed to him they will honour the insurance policy.
