Exclusive poll shows levy support

Voters support a Medicare levy increase to fund the National Disability Insurance Scheme, an exclusive poll has shown.

A Seven News Reachtel survey reveals most Australians are in favour of increasing the Medicare levy to pay for the scheme, with only a third opposed to the proposition.

But the poll of almost three thousand voters shows that despite support for the levy, the proposal hasn’t helped Julia Gillard’s popularity.

In fact, in a surprise blow for the Prime Minister, the poll shows that voters trust Tony Abbott – over Julia Gillard – to deliver the scheme successfully.

But there is a point of difference on which the Prime Minister can campaign on.

The Coalition is promising to scrap the levy, if the budget bottom line improves.

Ms Gillard on the other hand has said that the levy increase should be permanent, and not axed when the budget returned to surplus.
