Dodgy drivers avoiding fines

Dirty, damaged and dodging millions of dollars in fines.

A staggering 67,000 Victorian motorists escaped traffic fines by driving with unreadable or no number plates over the last financial year.

That's around 13 and a half million dollars in fines from red light and speed cameras that haven't been paid.

Some motorists brazenly flout the law by driving around with no number plate at all.

Police also admit drivers are buying illegal plastic covers and sprays from websites to avoid being caught.

And while 67,000 fines might seem a lot, the number is actually much higher.

The figures provided to Seven News don’t include motorists who were caught with damaged plates by police in patrol cars.

The problem is so bad the State Government is currently examining whether to increase the current penalty from $141 and three demerit points.
