Prison inmate punches female guard in the face when she tries to take his laptop

A bodycam video has captured the moment a Chicago inmate punched a female prison guard in the face, while she was trying to confiscate his laptop.

The footage recorded on December 5 shows the Cook County Jail inmate Jimmie Smith, 41, in a struggle with the corrections officer who found the contraband in his possession.

Unwilling to surrender the computer, Smith socked the woman in the cheek with a right hook and sent her reeling.

He appeared to surrender only when other guards intervened, moments later.

Smith was using the laptop to make "talk show-style" videos, which the offender called My Back's Against the Wall, the Cook County sheriff department said.

The laptop also contained "lewd photos" of Smith, ABC7 Chicago reported.

An investigation into the attack revealed Smith had previously been given access to the computer to prepare for his upcoming trial, as he was representing himself.

Investigators will determine how the offender was able to keep the laptop in his cell, the sheriff said.

Smith previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder, kidnapping and aggravated criminal sexual assault and two counts of contraband in a penal institution.

He has been in the Cook County jail for more than seven years.

A charge of aggravated battery for this assault has been added to Smith's previous offences. Smith is expected in court this week.
