US election 2016 result: Trump protesters flock to the streets
Anti-Donald Trump rallies have been held in at least 25 US cities, while five people were shot near a rally in Seattle.
Thousands of people have flooded the streets of New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Austin – mostly Democratic cities who voted for Hillary Clinton in Wednesday’s shock election result.
Republican Donald Trump claimed the victory in an upset that will see him become the 45th US President.
In New York, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets chanting “not my President” and “no racist USA” on the march to Trump Tower on 5th Avenue.
While there was no violence involved in the New York rally, police made four arrests.
Behind the rallies are Trump’s contentious plans to cut immigration and build a wall with Mexico.
In LA protesters burnt an effigy of Trump outside city hall.
A man was taken to hospital in a critical condition while four others were injured in the Seattle shooting near the anti-Trump rally.
“It appears that some type of argument took place. This individual began to walk away from the crowd, then turned and fired into the crowd,” police spokesperson Robert Merner said.
The gunman then fled the scene on foot and is yet to be located.
In Boston, thousands marched waving signs “Love Trumps Hate”, “Impeach Trump” and “Trump is racism” on the walk to Copley Square.
“When black lives are under attack, what do we do?” the group chanted.
“Stand up, fight back!” the crowd replied.
“When immigrant lives are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!”
A further 1000 Chicago residents gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower downtown, chanting: “No Trump. No KKK. No racist USA.”
"I’m just really terrified about what is happening in this country,” protester Adriana Rizzo told Fairfax.
“I’m particularly concerned about the rise of white nationalism and this is to show my support against that type of thing.”
Some people held up signs supporting gay power, black power, Muslim power, women power and Latino power as they protested into daylight.
Thousands of aggravated UCLA students flocked traffic in California, protesting the election result, while “F*** Donald Trump” chants could be heard at the White House gates on the other side of the country.
Minutes after Trump's win was announced, protestors burned the American flag and riot police stormed the streets with long batons, helmets and gas masks.
The demonstration exploded at about 1am (local time) when a Trump piñata was set on fire in a trash can outside a Westwood Boulevard store.
Meanwhile, those at the University of California, Santa Barbara, chanted "No more, Trump! No more, Trump!"
In Oakland 60 to 70 protesters gathered in the city's downtown and a female protester who was blocking traffic suffered major injuries after being hit by a car on Highway 24, Highway Patrol spokesman Sean Wilkenfied said.
One woman had “Trump, grab your balls” emblazoned on her chest, in reference to his much publicised comments about grabbing women “by the p***y”.
