90m deep sinkhole opens up on family's back doorstep

Drone camera footage shows the scale of a massive sinkhole, more than 90m deep, which opened up in the backyard of a home in England’s southwest.

The massive hole was found in the peninsula of Cornwall, a region with a history of tin and copper mining industries.

The sinkhole collapsed just metres from the back door of an unoccupied home while surveyors were analysing the property ahead of its sale, the Metro reported.

Mark Thomas, who captured the video, described the hole as “a massive mineshaft” which opened up under a garage at the house in Scorrier near Redruth in Cornwall.

He said the sinkhole's depth was about 91m to the water below "and god knows how deep from there".

While the region has a rich mining history, the discovery was unexpected according to Stuart Dann of Cornwall exploration and surveying company Mining Eye.

"The hole opened up when experts were drilling down the patio. Both houses nearby are empty, which is a very good job," he said.

"Structural engineers are deciding the future of the bungalow but cracks suggest that it may be joining a flooded piece of history, hundreds of metres underground," he said.
