Train crashes into platform

Five people have been injured after a rapid transit train crashed into a platform in Mumbai, India.

The incident happened at Churchgate Station, which is one of the busiest stations in Mumbai. Fortunately there were no major injuries due to the fact that the accident happened over a weekend when the station is less busy.

"If the train does not stop where it is supposed to, there are buffers to stop it but the train dashed into it. Investigation will make it clear whether the train was coming at high speed or there was something wrong with the buffers," Western Railways General Manager, Sunil Kumar Sood told NDTV.

Western Railway officials spent over five hours to remove the mangled train from the platform and the station remained affected for more than six hours after the accident.

Although it was reported that the train's brakes had failed, Mr Sood said the accident is believed to be a result of human error. The train was travelling at a too high speed and the driver should have pulled the emergency brake.

The driver will be questioned over the incident and there will be an examination into whether he may have been under any mental stress. The guard that was on board the train will also be questioned.

Adding to the chaos were hundreds of onlookers at the station taking pictures and selfies of the damaged train.
