Long-serving Tasmanian magistrate Tim Hill dies after illness

One of Tasmania's longest serving magistrates has died following an illness.

Tim Hill passed away on Sunday evening.

Mr Hill presided over cases in northern Tasmania for 22 years, first in Devonport and later in Launceston where he led the creation of the youth court.

The distinguished public servant also managed the Drug Diversion list.

It is estimated that during his time on the bench he presided over more than 55,000 matters.

Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin paid tribute to Mr Hill, saying he was a man with integrity, a calm temperament and sound judgement.

"Mr Hill's courteous and measured approach was appreciated by those who appeared before him and he was held in the highest regard by fellow magistrates, the profession, court staff and those who had dealings with the court," she said.

"He embodied the key qualities essential to judicial office: integrity, a calm temperament and sound judgement."

Dr Goodwin said his contribution to the court in the state's north was "significant".
