A woman has spent the final months of her life unselfishly trying to find her husband a new partner.

Clare Mauremootoo, 39, was facing heartbreaking prospect of leaving behind her husband of 11 years John, and her sons Jack, then 10, and Ben, then 7.

Having first showed symptoms of motor neurone disease in May 2006, by September 2006 the diagnosis was confirmed, The Mirror reports.

While John and their sons were busy trying to make the most of the time they had left together, Clare was focused on finding John someone to love and to help care for their boys.

Up until January 2007, Clare had been cared for at home, before moving to Weston Hospice.

"She seemed insistent and said she would help me find love," John said.

"She even started chatting to hospice staff in the hope of lining me up a date."

Just days after the couple squeezed in one more Valentine’s Day together, Clare passed away.

"I never forgot her wish for me to meet someone else, but I didn’t want the boys feeling like I was replacing their mum," John said.

"However, at night, after the boys were in to bed, I felt lonely.

"I missed Clare and wanted companionship."

So he took the plunge and signed up to an online dating website, where he met Julie Macfarlane, who has a young daughter and son about the same age as his boys.

They hit it off, and in April 2012, got married with their boys as ushers and their daughter a bridesmaid.

"During my speech I talked about Clare's diagnosis and the time we’d spent together, and her wish for me to find someone special," John said.

"I told everyone I thought Clare would be smiling down on us. She wanted us to be happy and I think she would be, seeing how things turned out."
