Woolworths' ploy to sell expiring vitamins to breastfeeding mums

Woolworths have come under fire for heavily reducing the price on breastfeeding supplements which expire in just three days.

One Sydney mother, who runs an Instagram page hunting for bargains, thought it was too good to be true when she saw Blackmores Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Gold supplements had dropped from $60 to $5.99.

As she quickly found out – it was.

The bottles, which each contain 180 tablets, had three days until their expiry date of September 30, 2018.

“It was really upsetting that they would try to exploit expecting mothers and others that are breastfeeding,” the Sydney mother wrote.

“It’s wrong to profit on something like this,” another wrote.

“That’s so incredibly misleading, I just had a look at our local Woolworths and they have done the same thing in Berwick [Victoria],” another wrote

A Woolworths spokesperson conceded to Yahoo7 News that the decision to try and sell the expiring supplements was an “error” in the store’s procedure.

“If a product cannot reasonably be consumed within the expiry window it should be withdrawn from sale and written off,” the spokesperson said.

“We apologise to any customers impacted by this and encourage them to get in contact with us if they have concerns with a recent purchase.”

They said the issue was rectified and they would be addressing the matter with the store.

A Blackmores’ spokesperson said they do not recommend using the products beyond their date but added they did not expect the product to deteriorate rapidly.
