Woolworths customers warned to watch out for common text message scam

Shoppers have been warned about a dodgy phone scam claiming to be associated with Woolworths.

A customer shared a post to the supermarket’s Facebook page on Friday, detailing how they received a text saying they were the winner of a Woolworths competition.

“Is this a scam?- (I received a) text saying I had won a ‘survey-lottery competition’. Beware!,” they wrote.

Their suspicions were soon confirmed by Woolworths, which wrote it was no stranger to scammers taking advantage of its brand.

“It's certainly a scam. We've made sure to report this to the ACCC's SCAM Watch,” a supermarket employee said, pointing the customer to its website with further information on common scams.

“You can also forward any scam emails you might have received to hoax@woolworths.com.au to help us out,” they added.

According to Woolworths, text message scams were often used by online criminals to get people to click on a link and fill out personal information.

“SMS scams are often specially crafted to look like they are from a legitimate organisation and encourage you to verify your details or claim a prize by tapping a link contained within the message,” the website states.

“The link may take you to a website that asks you to verify your account details by entering them on the website or even compromise the information on your phone by downloading a virus.”
