Woman's 'disgusting' find in Coles baby broccoli

A Coles shopper was grossed out to find a huge dead critter in her produce while unpacking her shopping.

The Adelaide woman took a picture of the large insect sitting on a leaf of her baby broccoli in her kitchen on Sunday.

“Coles this is absolutely disgusting,” she wrote while sharing the picture to the supermarket’s Facebook page.

“Do y’all have a habit of including dead caterpillars with your baby broccoli bunches?”

One social media user joked: “At least it’s fresh.”

But other customers argued finding a dead caterpillar was better than ingesting produce that had been “drenched in toxic pesticide chemicals”.

“It’s grown in nature. I would prefer that than a bunch of pesticides and chemicals used to keep the veg (sic) ‘clean’,” one wrote.

Another advised the woman to “keep calm and wash before use… like the tag says”.

A Coles customer representative responded to the woman, saying: “We have strict quality controls in place to ensure this doesn’t occur”, and asked her to send a direct message with more details.

A Coles spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo7 on Monday all its produce suppliers were assessed by an independent third party to ensure they meet the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) legal requirements.

“Coles takes the quality of all our products seriously. We have contacted the customer and will follow up with our supplier to investigate the matter,” a Coles spokesperson said.

“As always we encourage customers to return any item they’re not 100 per cent happy with to their nearest store for a full refund or replacement.”

The shock discovery comes days after a Queensland woman unwrapped her KFC chicken to find a cooked insect embedded in it.
