Police have shot a woman who allegedly charged at officers with a kitchen knife after she was sprayed with capsicum spray.

Police were called to Penders Park in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north, just before 3pm on Sunday following reports a woman was brandishing a kitchen knife.

It’s understood police challenged the woman in her 50s to drop the knife before they deployed capsicum spray.

Police fired a shot into her leg after she allegedly ran at officers while holding the knife.

The woman was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries to her thigh.

The incident will be investigated by the Armed Crime Squad with oversight from the Professional Standards Command, as protocol dictates when a police firearm is discharged.
