Grandmother killed by garbage truck while pushing grandson in pram

A woman pushing her grandson in a pram has been crushed and killed by a garbage truck on Sydney's northern beaches, but the boy has escaped unharmed.

The grandmother, in her 50s, was on Pittwater Road in Dee Why when she was struck at about 11.45am on Thursday, police said.

A Careflight helicopter made an emergency landing on the busy road and paramedics treated the woman, who sustained critical injuries.

She died at the scene, police said.

The young grandson, located in a pram nearby, was not injured during the incident.

The truck driver was visibly shaking and upset when police took the driver aside, the Manly Daily said.

He's been taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

"Another officer spoke to his mate who was on the truck he looked pretty upset too," witness Aaron Sault told the local paper.

A crime scene has been set up as investigations continue.
