'What type of bug even is that?': Woman finds live insect crawling in bag of baby spinach

A shopper has found a live insect crawling through a bag of baby spinach that was advertised as being “washed and ready to eat”.

The South Australian woman shared a video of her unsettling discovery to Facebook on Tuesday, asking others to help identify the bug inside.

“Just wanted to show my little friend I found in the spinach I just bought,” she wrote.

“I always wash our bagged greens but the bag does state ‘washed and ready to eat’ so just a heads up to everyone.”

She added, “what type of bug even is that?”.

The creepy crawly could be seen making its way around the bottom of the bag, presumably trying to find an opening to escape through.

Some people on social media thought the bug had the appearance of a wasp.

“As gross as it is, it’s good it’s alive in there otherwise (it means the bag is) packed full of chemicals,” someone said in a comment.

“That's a big wasp,” A Facebook user said.

The woman who filmed the video agreed, expressing relief the bag hadn’t landed into the hands of someone else.

“I think it’s actually a yellow jacket wasp. Glad it was me that got it and not an elderly person.”

Someone else was concerned at how the animal still managed to find its way into the bag.

“How does that get sealed in a washed and ready to eat packet?,” they wrote.

A Coles spokesperson to Yahoo News Australia the supermarket was aware of the issue.

“We are in contact with the customer and will investigate with our supplier.”

“We encourage any customer who is not 100 per cent satisfied with any Coles Brand product to return it for a refund or replacement.”
