Woman dies after daring her husband to set her on fire

A woman has died from burns after daring her husband to set her on fire during a row where she poured a can of petrol over herself as he waved a lighter at her.

The incident took place in the city of Shah Alam in the state of Selangor in Malaysia when the 44-year-old woman, whose identity has not been revealed, had an argument with her 41-year-old unnamed husband.

But the situation apparently escalated when the man, a truck driver, threatened to set the house on fire while holding a petrol container.

The victim then grabbed it from him and poured it on herself while daring him to burn her along with the house.

Apparently only wanting to scare his wife, he took a lighter and accidentally set her on fire.

The flames caught the victim’s headscarf and then spread on her body as the man tried to extinguish them, according to local media.

After a call for help, the victim was rushed to hospital where she spent 10 days, but succumbed to her injuries after developing a viral infection.

She had 48 per cent burns on her body, while the husband suffered small burns on hands and feet.

He reportedly surrendered to the authorities after the victim’s funeral.

The case has been classified as culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The couple were married for 19 years and had five children aged from five to 18.

Their arguments reportedly started eight years ago because the victim used to come home late from work.

The investigation continues.
