WATCH: Car packed with 600 fireworks explodes at New Year's Eve celebration

Terrifying footage shows the moment a man’s car exploded on New Year’s Eve after a lit firework landed on top of more than 600 fireworks packed in to the boot.

Hurara Hassan’s car was set ablaze during a party in a shopping centre car park in Houston, Texas, where people were setting off fireworks to welcome in 2018.

In the footage, Hassan’s Dodge Charger is engulfed in a huge fireball while fireworks pop out of the vehicle and dark smoke billows from the windows.

A number of people can be seen running from the erupting car shrouded in smoke, sending wizzing and fizzing rockets through the air.

Witnesses were stunned to see a woman calmly step out of the passenger seat and slam the boot lid shut, the Mirror reported.

The car reportedly sustained paint damage, although no one was injured in the potentially disastrous explosion.

"I was scared because my girl was in the car," Hassan told Eyewitness News.

"I ran to go see, but luckily she ran out."

Hassan has confirmed that the vehicle is repairable, but he’s planning on being much more vigilant next time around.

"I’ll go do the fireworks again," he confirmed. "But I’ll make sure the trunk is closed next time."

Jonathan Garza was one of those who saw the scene unfold, and recorded the blast on his phone.

At the scene on New Year's Day he told reporters "You can tell there was chaos here. It’s obvious.

"The Charger, like the trunk, was popping fireworks left and right."
