Warring coal parties fail to reach deal

Rearguard efforts to break an impasse that has shut one of the State's biggest coal mines were unsuccessful last night, plunging the South West closer towards an energy crisis.

A week after mining operations at Griffin Coal near Collie were suspended amid a pay dispute between the contractor that runs the mine and the company that owns it, _WestBusiness _ understands the warring parties remain polarised.

Carna Civil and Mining, the Waroona-based business that manages Griffin on behalf of Lanco Infratech, ordered staff off the job last Thursday over claims it was owed up to $30 million in unpaid debt.

The row casts a pall over energy supplies as Griffin supplies coal to Bluewaters, one of WA's biggest power generators.
