Warning for Aussie drivers after 'terrifying' act by man with machete

Aussie drivers are being warned about the importance of locking their car doors while driving after a grinning man brandishing a machete was filmed approaching vehicles stopped at traffic lights.

The scary incident happened in Deception Bay, in Brisbane's north, last Monday with police confirming a 21-year-old man has since been charged. Many motorists admit they're now "terrified".

The confrontation was filmed and shared on social media where it's since racked up thousands of comments and views.

It shows a Queensland woman, named Ash, in the car with her husband when they saw a man weaving through cars.

The couple started recording when they noticed he was holding a machete and "swinging it around", Ash revealed in a follow-up clip.

While she admitted it was "weird" she "never expected him to come to the car", describing it as "absolutely terrifying".

'Haunting' video shared online

In the video that's since gone viral, the man can be seen sporting a wide grin as he approaches Ash's car with a large machete in one hand.

He taps on the back window with the weapon and allegedly asks them to "let him in". He attempts to open the door but luckily it was locked preventing him from getting inside.

Ash said she was "stunned" and "didn't know what to do" particularly because their car was "boxed in" so they couldn't drive away.

"The smile was absolutely terrifying," she recalled in a follow-up clip on TikTok. "It's haunted every one of my dreams. It was a bad experience."

Grinning man targeted multiple cars

Ash and her husband weren't the only ones targeted. Queensland Police allege the man made multiple attempts to enter other vehicles in the area.

One woman shared her own experience on TikTok after seeing Ash's story and claimed the man was "out to kill and off his head",

"We were one of the first cars to call police. I was terrified he was going to kill someone," she wrote.

"It was a four-minute call to 000 before the cops arrived and took him down. It took like 6 cops wrestling him for ages to get him under control."

She claimed the man was "smashing windows, screaming and running all over the roads."

"It was the scariest thing I have ever seen," she added.

Motorists warned to lock car doors

Ash's mother Rachel Massey also shared the video on Facebook with a warning for others.

"Just a reminder to lock your doors when driving. This happened to my daughter this week at deception bay," she wrote.

Local news publication Moreton City news issued the same warning for motorists, saying "it's a reminder to always lock your doors when driving."

Man arrested and charged

Queensland Police told Yahoo News Australia a Bellara man was arrested following the incident.

"Shortly before 11am it will be alleged the man was walking down Deception Bay Road in possession of a machete and attempted to enter a number of vehicles," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"Police confronted the man and he was taken into custody without incident.

"The man has been charged with threatening violence, unlawful entry to motor vehicles and obstruct police."

He was refused bail and has been detained to appear in Redcliffe Magistrates Court on December 14.
