Perth boy, 8, rescued while clutching teddy after four hours trapped in trench
Emergency services have rescued a little boy who spent nearly four hours trapped in a trench in a Western Australian home on Sunday afternoon.
The eight-year-old fell into the trench around 4pm Sunday, prompting a delicate rescue operation in the Jandabup home.
The boy's father made a heroic attempt to save him, jumping into the trench when the dirt began to cover him.
Specialised rescue equipment was rushed to the property where firefighters began frantically digging to reach the boy, who was two-metres below the ground.
The delicate rescue operation required highly trained officers from Urban Search and Rescue and vertical rescue units.
Wooden boards were moved in to shore up the sides of the trench in a desperate bid to avoid a cave-in.
The boy was eventually pulled from the trench around 8pm, clutching at his teddy bear.
He was flown to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital with his mother by the RAC rescue helicopter before being transferred by road to Princess Margaret Hospital for Children with non-life threatening injuries.
