Grandfather brutally bashed after allegedly denying attackers request for cigarette

A Perth great-grandfather was left bleeding from the face and missing teeth after he was allegedly bashed while having a cigarette outside a shopping centre.

Speaking to Today Tonight from his hospital bed, Richard Tredwel, 71, claims he was attacked by a group of teens while he was having a cigarette with his wife Diane outside the Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre about 3.30pm Monday.

The Maddington man, who works at St John of God Hospital, was admitted there as a patient after suffering a fractured nose, two black eyes, a bleeding chin and missing teeth after the alleged attack.

He said the pair were approached by one of the youths, who asked him for a cigarette.

He said when they refused, one of the youths accused the couple of being racist.

It's claimed another youth then came along and threatened to "beat" him.

“They just bashed and bashed me in the face, he knew where to hit me, he broke my glasses and my teeth, terrible," he alleged.

"When I got the first sock in the jaw I thought he'd just walk off but no, he kept at me," he further alleged.

Mrs Tredwell said she was hit in the arm as the attackers allegedly tried to snatch her handbag and phone.

“I just don't think it's the Perth I grew up in, I just want it stopped," Mr Tredwell said.

Police, who reviewed security camera footage of the alleged incident, have charged a 16-year-old Ashfield boy with one count of aggravated assault with intent to rob.

Investigations are continuing.
