'Western Power' seeking love on Tinder ahead of WA election

It’s now possible you have less Tinder matches than a public utility after the ETU launched its own page on the dating app.

The tongue-in-cheek viral campaign has been launched especially for Valentine’s Day.

It is designed to throw support behind the public utility which faces the possible prospect of increased levels of privatisation if Premier Colin Barnett's Liberal government is kept in power at the WA state elections next month.

The Tinder profile bills Western Power as a “loving, caring state-owned electricity network facing possible disastrous break-up.

“I’ll keep you warn, light up your life and restore your faith in the power of love.”

By 8am Perth time on Tuesday, Western Power already has 65 matches on Tinder.

Western Australian campaigners also recorded a heartfelt video expressing their undying devotion to the service provider.

“This is a message for someone very special,” said the first campaigner in the video.

“You brought light into my life, when all there was, was darkness,” said another.

“When the nights were cold, you kept me warm,” remarked a third.

“And I will never, ever, let anyone take you away from me,” continued another.

Further messages express their love for Western Power and even feature a man hugging an electrical pole.

Electrical Trades Union’s WA secretary Les McLaughlan said the Valentine’s Day phenomena was an indication of the extent of community desire to keep the company in public hands.

“Western Australians love Western Power. They love having reliable services and affordable bills compared to the privatised eastern states.

“They love being safe from avoidable fires caused by under-maintained privatised infrastructure. They love having apprenticeships available for their kids,” he said.

West Australians head to the polls on March 11 for the state elections.
