Anti-Adani Coal Mine Protesters Interrupt MP's Speech in Townsville

Protesters interrupted a speech by Queensland opposition leader Tim Nicholls as he arrived on stage at a Townsville event on Wednesday, November 22.

The demonstrators hid under the stage for hours ahead of the event so they could call for the Adani coal mine proposal to be scrapped. The group behind the protest, Frontline Action on Coal, said the mine was jeopardising 69,000 tourism jobs. According to WIN News reporter Bryce Heaton, they were escorted out by security.

The incident came amid rumours the mining project would soon secure funding from a Chinese investor and no longer require an Australian government-subsidised loan of as much as $1 billion to go ahead, ABC reported. Credit: Twitter/Bryce Heaton via Storyful
