Hurricane Maria Moves Away from Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria moved off Puerto Rico’s northwestern coast Wednesday afternoon, September 20, but the island’s mountains took their toll on the storm, dropping its top wind speeds to 110mph, a Category 2.

Forecasters said Maria would strengthen now that the hurricane is once again over open water. A hurricane warning is in effect for the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the southeastern Bahamas. The storm is forecasted to reach the Turks and Caicos by Thursday night. Credit: CIRA/RAMMB/NOAA via Storyful
