Heartbreaking video shows seal choking on plastic bag in the ocean

Heartbreaking footage of a seal struggling to break free of a plastic bag has been captured by a beachgoer, underlining the danger of plastic waste to marine life.

Dafydd Thomas was walking down a stretch of beach off the Anglesey coast in Wales when he saw the visibly distressed sea mammal trying to free itself.

"Sad sight this morning, poor seal battling trying to free itself from some plastic in its mouth," he wrote alongside the footage.

While the damage plastic bags inflict on major oceans and shorelines has been well documented, Anglesey MP Albert Owen conceded local beaches in his area are also suffering.

"I have been picking some bags up on coastal walks over the last few days - really is a big local, national and international problem.

"We agree its a major problem-and it is a problem for us all, as it impacts on our wellbeing, our environment and eco-system. Politicians, the public and private sectors need to work together, there are fewer plastic bags but attitudes on disposal must change."

Last year Coles announced it would join Woolworths, Big W and BWS liquor stores in banning single-use plastic bags from all stores.

The Woolworths Group, which also includes Dan Murphy's and Cellarmasters liquor stores, plans to get rid of all single-use plastic bags by June 30 this year.

Instead shoppers will be offered reusable bags ranging from 15 cents to $2, although Big W may provide reusable bags at no extra cost.
