Victoria police charge man with 2003 Melbourne gangland murder

Victorian police have charged a man with the murder of one of the highest profile victims of Melbourne’s gangland wars.

Graham ‘the Munster’ Kinniburgh was killed minutes after midnight on December 13, 2003, after being confronted by his killer outside of his home in Belmont Avenue, Kew.

Kinniburgh was believed to be one of the kingpins of the infamous ‘Carlton Crew’ which waged war against Carl Williams ‘New Boys’ faction, resulting in numerous high profile murders.

Police in Victoria charged a 55-year-old Peter Asling, from Anakie, with one count of murder this afternoon.

A court rejected an application by his lawyer to suppress his identity.


The arrest come after a 12 year investigation by detectives from Victoria Police’s Purana Taskforce.

Kinniburgh's murder was depicted in the television series Underbelly.

He was one of several high ranking Melbourne criminal identities to die in the bloody gang war, which lasted from 1998 until 2010, including Jason and Mark Moran and Alphonse Gangitano.

Williams, one of the men believed to be a driving force behind the gang war, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 2007.

He was killed behind bars three years later.
