Vicious trolls target Instagram model's account after death on superyacht
Social media trolls have sparked a series of vicious spats, after targeting the Instagram account of Australian model Sinead McNamara, who died on the back of a billionaire’s superyacht late last month.
The 20-year-old Port Macquarie resident was found in a critical condition, tangled in ropes at the rear of the Mayan Queen IV while the vessel was moored at the port of Argostoli in Kefalonia, Greece.
She died as she was being airlifted to hospital.
While initial evidence gathered by the coast guard suggested the Instagram influencer took her own life, the final cause of death will not be announced until lab tests are completed, which could take a month or more.
But as Ms McNamara’s heartbroken family and friends wait for answers, Instagram users, many of whom are operating under fake profiles, have targeted her recent social media images accusing her of seeking attention and fame.
“Another make-believe Instsgramer (sic) signs off. Antisocial media is killing everyone, one at a time,” another rote.
“You lived for attention, now you’ve got it,” another added.
“Fake life, fake happiness,” wrote another.
“I guess all those selfies and followers didn’t help her self-esteem,” one Instagram user wrote.
The vicious abuse directed at the young crew member was condemned by other social media users, who called on Instagram to investigate the “disgusting” comments and shut down her profile.
“Please put an end to this… shut this poor girl’s profile down,” one comment read.
“I can only hope her family never see’s these,” another wrote.
Days away from family reunion
Ms McNamara, who had been working as a stewardess on the $195 million superyacht owned by billionaire mining mogul Alberto Bailleres, was planning to meet her family in Europe who had just travelled from Queensland.
She had in fact been planning to return to Australia and had taken to Instagram to reveal her excitement over her imminent reunion with her family.
“It is less then a month till I get to see my family & friends in Aus. Excitement overload!!’ she wrote in an Instagram caption.
The family’s Greek lawyer, Haralambos Triandafylopoulos, revealed in a statement she was just two days away from returning home at the time of her death.
Her family is now demanding a thorough investigation into her death.
