Fed-up builder catches tool thief in the act

A builder who was sick of his tools being stolen has taken crafty measures to stop the repeat thievery.

Jamie Grenfell, from Kew in Melbourne, said he’s been robbed six times in three years.

“It’s accumulated to about $30,000,” he said.

“They break in, they rob you, you replace things and they come back and take new stuff.”

Last week, Mr Grenfell had more than $7000 worth of tools stolen.

Fed up, the builder decided to install cameras in his ute. He also left the car unlocked and removed any valuables, hoping the thief would strike again.

Footage, now with police, shows the crook carrying out his crime under the cover of darkness.

He rifles through the ute, briefly checking behind to make sure there are no prying eyes.

But he never notices the cameras and falls right into Mr Grenfell’s trap.

Victoria Police Detective Senior Constable Ben Mahon said the video is good “good footage” and hoped police could “catch up with him (the thief) very soon”.

Police are also investigating 14 other thefts from vehicles in the Booroondara area, which includes Kew, Camberwell and Hawthorn.

Luckily, only a $200 battery charger was stolen this time around, but Mr Grenfell had a warning for the thief.

“Hand yourself in because if any other tradie gets a hold of you, you’re in trouble,” he said.
