Search for missing professor who vanished 'out of character'

The wife of a professor missing in bushland northeast of Melbourne has made an emotional plea to help find him.

Professor John Forster, 58, is a prominent molecular geneticist at Latrobe University.

His wife Christine said she last saw him at their Diamond Creek home at 10am Saturday before she left for a dental appointment with the couple’s two sons.

But when they returned later Prof Forster had disappeared.

The 58-year-old is an extremely fit and keen walker, but he wasn’t carrying a smartphone and his family says his disappearance is well out of character.

His car was found in the saddle dam car park at Sugarloaf Reservoir, not far from the family home, at 11pm on Saturday.

Mrs Forster is hoping someone may have seen him.

“He’s lost, it’s not (that) he’s drifted off or any other reason and he didn’t have his mobile or his wallet of anything with him,” she said.

“(We are) totally scared because we want him home.”

SES, police and Air Wing spent Monday scouring the area around the car park.

Police are hoping Prof Forster is lost or disoriented and have asked people in this area to search their properties and outbuildings just in case.

Unless there is a breakthrough the search will continue on Tuesday.
