Four-hour-long siege ends in Melbourne, man taken for mental health checks

A man has been taken to hospital for mental health assessment after a four-hour siege in Melbourne's southeast.

The siege ended with the man surrendering peacefully, hours after heavily armed police officers surrounded a unit on Glen Huntly Road in Elwood on Monday afternoon.

The man allegedly barricaded himself inside the apartment and appeared agitated.

At one point he threw a kettle and other objects at officers from Victoria Police's Critical Incident Response.

News cameras also recorded the man appearing to swing a chair at police.

He was reportedly armed with a knife.

Police told AAP they would not confirm if the man was armed, or other operational details, but said the man was alone in the unit.

Officers surrounded the building at about 4pm, blocking Glenhuntly Road between Tennyson and Daley streets as they tried to coax the man out.

Officers used tactical search mirrors to assess any movement as negotiations continued for hours.

After about four-and-a-half hours, the man surrendered to officers without incident and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
