Melbourne Cup cop-pusher apologises for bizarre behaviour
The racegoer who shoved a policeman into a Flemington flower bed has apologised for her bizarre behaviour.
She will be charged with assaulting police over the cup day clash that was captured by a 7 News camera, and has now been watched millions of times online.
Late yesterday acting superintendent Steve Cooper was preparing to give details of crowd behaviour when he copped some himself from 24-year-old Sarah Finn.
“Next thing I know she whacked me in the chest and I was caught off balance, and over I went,” he said.
Reluctant to appear on camera today, Finn said she was trying to contact the officer to personally say sorry.
After taking legal advice from gangland lawyer Zara Garde Wilson, Finn told 7 News:
“I deeply apologise for my actions.”
“I acknowledge a massive error in judgement on my behalf. My level of intoxication is no excuse.”
The video on 7 News Facebook pages has been viewed almost 4.5 million times and attracted 50,000 comments.
“I’m certainly copping it from mates all over the world, so the only thing that’s hurt is my pride,” acting superintendent Cooper said.
“I certainly don’t condone the behaviour but I can certainly see the funny side of it as well.”
There are thousands of beautiful roses at Flemington but now a juniperous conifer bush is the most famous plant in site.
Thankfully for acting superintendent Cooper, there is not a thorn in sight.
Groundskeepers said the bush had also survived relatively unscathed.
“We come this morning after we seen the video online, thought we’d have a look to see if there was any damage.” gardener Steve Campbell said.
“A couple of snapped branches, but nothing we couldn’t handle.”
