A man suspected of using a mobile phone to video a female student on the toilet at a Melbourne university has himself been caught on film.

The 19-year-old woman, who had just come from the campus library, looked up from a bathroom cubicle and saw a phone being held over the wall, police say.

Terrified, she screamed and the phone disappeared.

The woman heard a man in the next stall apologising.

However, officers investigating the incident, which occurred on March 3, now say they also have CCTV footage of the suspect and have released an image of him carrying a phone.

They say the man could have been waiting in the toilets for up to 20 minutes before the woman arrived.

Investigators believe the man may have been waiting in the toilets for up to 20 minutes before the woman entered.

He is described as being Asian in appearance, between 20-25 years old and 160-170cm tall with short black hair.

He was wearing thick-rimmed black glasses at the time of the incident.
