Bashed nurse fighting for life

A Good Samaritan nurse who was viciously bashed while trying to save a drug addict is clinging to life in hospital.

Kane Quinn and a colleague were attacked when they rushed to the aid of a stranger in a Melbourne park last Friday night.

The off-duty nurses tried to help the man who was suffering life-threatening effects of a drug overdose when another man lashed out at them.

Mr Quinn was hit and suffered severe head injuries.

He is now in an induced coma. His colleague, who was also badly hurt, has now been discharged from hospital but is too traumatised to work.

The 38-year-old started at the Monash Hospital in the nineties and always wanted to work in emergency - a career step he achieved in 2005.

Monash Hospital chief nurse Cheyne Chalmers told Seven News: “He is a very experienced emergency nurse and this is just devastating that this has happened to one of our own.”

A 33-year-old heroin addict has been charged over the bashing and will face court again next week.

Mr Quinn’s devastated colleagues started a fundraiser to support his young family.

His family is holding a bedside vigil at the Alfred Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

They have been warned that if he pulls through, it is unlikely he will ever work again.
