US expat appalled by 'childish' Aussie habit

When it comes to hosting a party, this man says Australians have got it all wrong.

An American living in Australia has ruffled feathers by calling out what he says is the "childish" way Aussies throw parties. He was appalled to discover that, unlike in the US where hosts provide alcohol for everyone, guests Down Under are expected to bring their own drinks.

Sharing his shock at this cultural difference after attending an Aussie party, the TikToker said, "In America when you bring drinks to a party, you're just contributing to the host's pool of drinks, but in Australia you literally bring your own drinks and then you drink your own drinks."

The man said he only realised what's expected of guests at Australian parties when a woman at the event opened a bottle of sparkling wine and refused to share it with him: "I got a cup and I was like, 'Oh I'll have some of that'. And then she said 'Oh that's mine'."

He was even more offended by what his fellow partygoer did next. "When she thought I was gonna drink it she literally picked up the bottle and took it with her to the other side of the room, like she was in third grade," he said.

Aussies slam tourist's hot take

Unsurprisingly, Aussie viewers were mostly unimpressed with the US man's take on Australian party culture, with many arguing that alcohol is too expensive to be provided by a host and therefore locals have embraced the "pretty simple" concept of BYO. "The Boomers all share but we've got a cost-of-living crisis," commented one viewer.

"Have you seen how expensive alcohol is here? We can barely afford our own drinks let alone shouting the room," responded another, while someone else quipped, "Alcohol is crazy expensive so bring your own. We don't freeload like Americans."

American hits back at 'hate mail'

The expat wasn't about to back down, stating his case in a follow-up video. "Can I just say something to all this hate mail I'm getting from Australians who say 'You should've known. Why would you drink other people's drinks?' My logic is, if you were going to host a party, why wouldn't you be an accommodating host and actually have drinks?" he asked.

"If I have to bring my own drinks, I would rather go to a bar and have a good drink. The point is to gather people at your house — and Aussies are very communal, except when it comes to alcohol. So I'm just saying, if I'm going to have to drink my own drinks with my friends, and pay for my own drinks, then let's just go to a bar and skip the cheap part, because honestly it's still childish."

Responding to Aussies who accused him of not spending enough time outside the US, the man clarified that he's very well travelled and accused his critics of being uncultured. "I think you need to get out in the world and explore a bit," he said.
