  • The plane's crew spent more than two hours cleaning up the mess, according to one passenger who was purportedly on the flight

A United Airlines flight from Houston to Seattle was diverted to Dallas due to a passenger's dog pooping in the aisle.

The canine’s “messy accident” occurred in first class on April 5, and the crew spent more than two hours trying cleaning the plane’s carpets with paper towels, according to Reddit user James Hobbs, who says he was on the ill-fated flight.

A representative for the airline confirmed the incident to PEOPLE.

Hobbs tells PEOPLE, “The mess was so bad in the first class bathroom that even after cleaning they still closed it for the rest of the flight.”

He adds that travelers were given masks and alcohol wipes to sniff, due to the strong odor, which made him “ill.”

The excrement, he says, was “a very liquid form” that was in “several” places in the aisle and got on the shoe of the passenger sitting next to him.

“The cabin crew deserve accolades,” says Hobbs, who shared a photo and video of the incident. “They responded well despite having to hop over the mess.”

Hobbs adds that the flight’s meals “went bad” while they were stuck on the ground and the cabin's crew members were "pleading" to the gate crew for more snacks and water.

“It was a bad situation for passengers, the dog, and that poor owner," says.

According to United’s website, cats and dogs must travel in a pet carrier that fits under the seat, and the only pets allowed on planes without a carrier are service animals.

This was far from the only similar incident on a flight in recent months.

In September, a Delta flight from Atlanta to Barcelona made national news after it was diverted due to a passenger's case of severe diarrhea. In a clip from an emergency call to dispatchers shared on social media, the pilot called the incident “a biohazard issue.”

One commenter on X, who said their partner was on the Delta flight, reported that it “smelled horrible” and that vanilla-scented disinfectant used to mask the odor “only made it smell like vanilla s---.”

"Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to thoroughly clean the airplane and get our customers to their final destination,” Delta told PEOPLE in a statement when asked about the incident.

And in October, an EasyJet flight from the Spanish island of Tenerife to London was canceled after a passenger defecated on the bathroom floor.
