Two men arrested after base jumping off Sydney crane

Two men who base jumped off a crane in Sydney have been arrested after mobile phone footage captured one of them in the act.

A passer-by filmed the moment one of the men jumped from a construction crane along Harbour Street, near Darling Harbour, on Tuesday morning.

The 37-year-old Freshwater man and the 34-year-old Oatley man parachuted onto the street below before one was caught by council rangers upon landing.

Police searched the car of another man seen nearby and found base jumping equipment including a parachute.

They are now hunting a third man, believed to be an accomplice.

“We believe that there was a third person that may have been involved in this activity,” Acting Inspector Gen O’Donnell said.

“Base jumping is obviously an inherently dangerous activity, and by base jumping and doing this activity in the city, it places others at risk,” she added.

While it is not illegal to base jump in NSW, anyone who puts others at risk by jumping or parachuting off a building is guilty of an offence under the Summary Offences Act.

It’s a stunt NSW Property Minister Victor Dominello has warned against.

“Don’t do it, because quite frankly, this is a very serious offence,” he told 7 News.

“You are putting the lives of others at risk and you will be dealt with accordingly.”

Both men were granted bail and are due in court next month.
