Truckie's 'very dangerous' act on motorway divides opinion - so who is in the wrong?

A truck driver’s actions, which have been branded “very dangerous” by a police chief, have divided opinion online.

Dashcam footage uploaded to Dash Cam Owners Australia’s Facebook page, shows the truck side-swipe a car when moving to the middle lane on the M1 between Sydney and Newcastle on February 22.

The red car can be seen turning into the lane from the right, just seconds before the truck makes its move after indicating at the same time.

The car anticipates the truck’s move and slams the brakes on, yet the two vehicles still collide.

As the car brakes further, the truck speeds off without stopping.

While Highway Patrol Command Chief Inspector Phil Brooks told News Corp the truckie’s move was a “very dangerous act”, there has been considerable sympathy for the driver online with some suggesting the truckie hadn’t seen the car.

“Reasons not to turn into an indicating trucks blind spot,” one person wrote on Facebook, garnering over 800 likes.

Others however believe the truckie was at fault.

“He should be more aware of his surroundings as the car [indicated and merged] before he did,” one person wrote, assuming the truckie was male.

Chief Inspector Brooks confirmed to Yahoo7 News inquiries were continuing and no charges have been laid.
