Tributes are pouring in for a talented young WAFL player who died while holidaying in Prague over Christmas.

Dakota Baldwin-Wright, 25, played 44 games for the Perth Demons before taking a year-long break to go travelling across Europe.

Prague City Police said he died after he was struck by a train about 6am on Christmas Eve at Vršovice Station.

“Despite the intensive braking of the train set, the train driver was unable to prevent a collision,” police said in a statement.

“According to criminologists, it was most likely an unfortunate accident.”

Mr Baldwin-Wright’s family is now travelling to the Czech Republic, with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade providing consular assistance.

Perth Football Club president Adrian Barich said in a statement that the club was “shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden loss” of Mr Baldwin-Wright.

“Dakota was involved in an accident whilst travelling overseas,” he said.

“He was an outstanding young man who was much admired and will always be remembered for his contribution to the club.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to send our thoughts to Dakota’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“His passing has also rocked our playing group as he was a respected member of our senior team.

“Our priority over the coming weeks will be to support his family, our players and the PFC community.”

Mat Bateman from Manning Rippers said in a social media post that it was a tragic loss.

“A quality young man, extremely well respected, very coachable and a great teammate. Will never be forgotten,” he said.

Blake Johnson wrote: “This is devastating news, he was a great teammate to play with over the years and an even greater bloke off the field.”

Ryan Keatley posted: “Many fond memories of Dakota from my many years spent at Perth Football Club behind the bar. The memories will be treasured forever.”

Simon Collins wrote: “Still trying to take all this in. A young man having a year for himself, seeing the sights of the world and now he isn’t.”
