Tragic details emerge of trainee pilot's drowning death

Fresh details have emerged about the death of a trainee pilot in South Australia.

Mansour Anvari lost his life in treacherous waters off the rugged Yorke Peninsula coastline, about 300 kilometres south of Port Augusta.

The 20-year-old was on a family holiday and died trying to save one of his older brothers on Saturday.

“They were fishing standing on top of the rock and then his brother slipped on the water,” friend Mohammad Nateghi said.

“And a wave took him away.”

The trainee pilot was swept out to sea and it took rescue crews two hours to recover his body.

The tragedy devastated friends and family who migrated from Afghanistan a decade ago.

“He was such a helpful person for his mum so everyone loved him,” Mr Nateghi said.

Mr Anvari was the second Afghani to drown in South Australia last week after 17-year-old Arash Yari lost his life on the Fleurieu Pensinula.

“It’s very hard for the whole community,” Mr Nateghi said.

Lifesaving authorities say despite the recent tragedies the message is getting through and demand is soaring for migrant swimming lessons.

“Most of the people who come from other countries don’t know how to swim,” Mr Nateghi said.
