Tradie in towel 'tubing' on ute as thieves steal his car from driveway

When Brisbane tradie Bobby-Lee Cook’s shower was interrupted by thieves stealing his ute on Wednesday night, he grabbed a towel and jumped onto the back of the tray as the vehicle took off.

Mr Cook estimates he held on for at least 30 minutes and told 7 News that his only thought was "You're not taking my pride and joy," of the ute he had just finished paying off.

Balancing on the back of the dual-cab grey Toyota Hilux was no easy task as it reached speeds of 140km/h.

“It was like tubing,” Mr Cook said.

The thieves did their best to lose the determined Mr Cook, at one point throwing a coffee mug which hit his head.

Mr Cook finally decided to let go when another car joined in to help the two thieves in the stolen ute.

Thinking of his wife, Amy, who is heavily pregnant, Mr Cook decided it was time to let go and gave up the pursuit.

"I've just got to let it go ... I've got a family on the way," Mr Cook said.

The down to earth tradie described the ute as his “pride” on his Facebook page, pleading for help to track it down.

Mrs Cook said she was just relieved that her husband came home safe.

Luckily, Mr Cook wasn’t seriously injured and the couple are busy preparing for the birth of their first child.

Brisbane Police are still on the hunt for the stolen vehicle and have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
