Toddler orphaned after parents die in triple-fatal crash

A toddler has been left orphaned after a husband and wife were killed when their car was hit head-on by a speeding P-plate driver.

Sarah and Omer Mazi’s car was struck by a speeding Commodore going the wrong way on Ipswich Road at Moorooka, in Brisbane’s south, on Sunday night.

The Brisbane couple, who just had celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary the day before, had recently started driving for Uber Eats and were on their way to work when they crashed.

Their little boy still thinks mum, 33, and dad, 41, are at work.

Ms Mazi’s brother Stephen Furlong was at a loss about what to do next.

“We still have to tell him that his mum and dad aren’t coming home, so that’s pretty hard. I don’t know how we are going to tell him,” Mr Furlong said.

“I’m frustrated [the driver] did what he did. There is no excuse, there is no excuse whatsoever.

“I’m angry, disappointed.”

P-plater Jay Rice was driving more than 150 kilometres an hour. The 18-year-old also died in the crash.

Seconds earlier, the Commodore also clipped a third vehicle – a Hyundai, with five teenagers onboard.

Luckily driver Lachlan Fleming managed to swerve.

He and his friends say 20 minutes before the crash they saw the Commodore speeding and weaving through traffic, with the driver travelling in the same direction as them.

The next time they saw the car, it was coming straight at them.
