Toaster recalled over fears it could cause electric shocks

A product recall has been issued for a toaster sold at Spotlight stores across Australia, amid electric shock fears.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released a safety warning on behalf of the fabric and homewares retailer on Sunday advising customers who purchased the Bodum Bistro Stainless Steel 2 Slice Toaster Model to stop using it immediately.

The safety watchdog citied a “risk of an electrical shock” if users touched the inside heating element when the toaster is plugged into a power supply and the control lever is not triggered but remains in the upper position.

“The product may not comply with the Electrical Safety Standard. Fluctuating voltage issue may cause an electrical shock,” the statement said.

The item affected by this recall is the Bodum Bistro Stainless Steel 2 Slice Toaster Model 10709-57AUS-4.

No other Bodum toasters are affected, according to the ACCC.

The kitchen appliances were sold exclusively at Spotlight stores nationally from around August last year until early February this year.

The chain has advised customers to immediately stop using the toasters and return them to any Spotlight store for a full refund.

The recall comes one week after fashion retailer Cotton On issued a product recall for portable pocket chargers sold across Australia amid fire and electric shock fears.
