The circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated by Cairns detectives from the Child Protective Investigation Unit.

“We're just trying to work out exactly what's happened,” Inspector Jason Smith told Channel Nine.

“The death of any child is an awful thing, which is why it is so important for us to get to the bottom of this,” he said.

Police told Nine News the boy boarded the bus on Tuesday morning and was supposed to be dropped off at a local daycare centre.

Nine News also reported that it was the bus driver who discovered the boy’s body this afternoon. The driver was treated for shock at the scene and then taken to hospital.
