Three mysterious explosions in an hour across Melbourne suburbs

A series of explosions in the space of almost an hour across Melbourne's east and northeast overnight is being investigated by police.

The first two explosions happened on James Street in Northcote and Maltravers Road in Ivanhoe between 8.30pm and 9pm on Sunday.

Officers attended both scenes and found a number of letterboxes and rubbish bins that had been destroyed.

An explosive device was also placed inside a washing machine on the back of a ute parked on Kilby Road in Kew East.

It detonated about 9.10pm, causing extensive damage to the car.

No one was injured in any of the incidents and the investigation is ongoing.
