Woman's mummified body found in house amid rats, spiders

The mummified body of an elderly woman has been found in her US home amid rats and spiders and 300 bottles of urine.

The horrific details emerged on Saturday but it is not clear when the body was discovered.

Police said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances in the woman's death but that the it was the worst case of hoarding they had ever seen, the New York post reports.

One neighbour thought the house, with its tattered curtains and no sign of life, was abandoned, but others said a woman from the house often took a dog for a walk.

Police believe the elderly woman whose body was discovered was her mother.

Council staff called in professional cleaners after being overwhelmed by the stench. Firefighters initially called to the scene had to use breathing equipment to go inside

It took several days to remove all the rubbish.

A council supervisor told The San Francisco Chronicle: “I’m hearing that there were rats, spiders, dog faeces and trash just everywhere, in some cases piled to the ceiling."
