House Rules: Luxe lounge
Habitat asked the House Rules teams to share their secrets for four of the best room reveals of the series so far. For Queenslanders Ben and Danielle, Cassie and Matt took their dark, wood-filled lounge room and transformed it into a sophisticated space with a hint of ski-chalet chic.
When it came to renovating Ben and Danielle’s home, Cassie and Matt worked hard to hit all the House Rules, which included “style our house preppy and eclectic” and “retain a hint of ski chalet in the living room”.
“We wanted to create a comfortable living room, a place Ben and Danielle could relax and which was inviting,” Cassie said.
The pair transformed the home’s old bedroom and ensuite into a stylish new living area. Matt said that while it was a slow process because of the construction work, the result was worth the wait. “We loved our mix of old, new and one-off pieces as we think our zone had a lot of character, which is what Ben and Danielle wanted,” he said.
Judges Ms Moore and Mr Snell loved the deep-blue panelled hearth featuring a fireplace from Heat & Glo and Samsung television from Harvey Norman. Mr Snell called it the “hero” element and said it fulfilled the touch of ski chalet that Ben and Danielle sought to keep.
Ms Moore said the living room was the best example of meeting Ben and Danielle’s wish for a “preppy eclectic” home, and she was impressed by the confident mixing of colour and pattern. She liked the furniture choice and layout, which she described as “comfortable and so inviting”. Of note were the freestanding entertainment unit from Matt Blatt and the brown leather sofa from Dare Gallery.
The styling, she said, included a great collection of pieces filled with personality and history. These were sourced from Matt Blatt, Woolongabba Antiques, Gallery Life, Santa Rosa and French & English.
Linen from Adairs, lighting from Beacon Lighting and Custom window treatments from Franklyn Blinds complete the look.
Mr Snell said it was a sophisticated design which grew on him and said Cassie and Matt really hit the “preppy eclectic” theme with the furnishings, styling and proportion.
