Two red kangaroos made the flight from Broome to Kununurra last Wednesday to complete their rehabilitation at Kangaroo Haven before they are released back into the wild.

Kangaroo Haven volunteers Mandy Watson and Melanie Onofaro were ready and waiting when the male and female kangaroos, each weighing about 7kg, were carried off the plane in crates.

Ms Watson said Kimberley Wildlife Carers and Associates in Broome had been sending kangaroos to her for years because her facilities were well-equipped for larger and older kangaroos.

Mrs Watson said a surge in the cost of airline transport for animals last year meant she was restricted to transporting kangaroos from Broome to Kununurra on certain days when it was cheaper to fly.

In December, Qantas confirmed the cost of carrying animals on its flights had increased from November 1 and heavily discounted rates would be discontinued.

Mrs Watson said freight costs from Broome to Kununurra were paid by KWCA, but costs associated caring for the two new reds at Kangaroo Haven would fall on her.

Feeding the 30-plus kangaroos at the haven costs about $2000 a month.

Mrs Watson has created a "sponsor a roo" program where people can pay $50 and receive letters and photographs about their chosen kangaroo. To visit Kangaroo Haven, or to donate, contact Ms Watson on 0438 921 942.
