Belltower signatures saved on disk
All WA schools have been sent copies of student signatures that were inscribed on the tiles that have been torn up from around the Belltower in Perth.
Most of the tiles, which include the signatures of motor racing star Daniel Ricciardo, Fremantle Dockers forward Michael Walters, Olympic swimmer Tommaso D'Orosgna and Paralympian Katrina Porter, have been dug up and destroyed as part of the Elizabeth Quay project.
The final 15 to 20 per cent of the tiles will be dug up over the next couple of months.
The tiles, which contain about 200,000 signatures from students at WA schools in 1999, were considered too fragile to preserve.
The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority tested a section to analyse whether the tiles could be removed intact but they proved to be too weak.
A disk that has been sent to schools includes a photograph of the tiles and the original PDF file of the students' signatures.
The photographs will also be used for an as yet undecided "future interpretation" within the Elizabeth Quay project.
At the time of their unveiling in 2000, then Liberal youth and arts minister Mike Board said the signatures project "would create an enduring link to the past".
"The young people who took part have signed their names into history and helped create a unique landmark which they and their families will be able to visit in years to come," Mr Board said.
