Rams beat Mustangs

Rockingham Rams Football Club’s league side played with pride at the weekend as the club celebrated its 60th anniversary, thumping the Mandurah Mustangs by 83 points.

Finally getting three senior players back into the squad, including captain Peter McGennisken, the Rams were able to control the game, kicking three goals early to move into the second quarter with a 10-point lead on the bottom of the ladder side.

The Rams forward line proved too strong in the second quarter as they slotted a further four goals and eights points, while the Falcons only managed two goals and one point.

Leading by a comfortable 29 points in the second half, the Rams stepped on to the ground with confidence, pushing the lead out to 62 points by three-quarter time.

The day only got worse for the Mustang boys who were tamed by the Rams, losing 19.21(135) to 8.4 (52).

Coach Craig Otto said the team was strengthened by the return of captain Peter McGennisken, ruckman Dom Star-Hossack and Chris Reeves.

“We probably had our most senior side out on the field since round three,” he said.

“The three seniors who came in have all played close to 100 league games and they just help to steady the ship a little bit with that experience.

“It was a good reward for the boys who have been in the league side all year and have been struggling and have copped a few hidings.”

Otto said colts players Jayden Treadwell, Kyle Hinchcliffe and Kevin Smith once again played superbly.

With only five games to go, Otto said he hoped to finish the season strongly.

“We just hope to be competitive and win a couple of games to finish the season off,” he said.

The league teams will have a two-week break to make way for the Landmark Country Football Championships.
