Slammers go back-to-back

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers women’s side has continued its fantastic start to the 2015 State Basketball League season, with two wins in two days.

On Saturday night the Slammers accounted for the Stirling Senators by nine points at the Warwick Leisure Centre.

After trailing by five points at half-time, a big third quarter where the Slammers scored 24 points to just 16, gave the away side the advantage and the women held on through the last to take a close win.

In a low-scoring affair, import Deonica McCormick continued her fantastic run by scoring 22 points, while Patricia Bright showed her height was definitely an advantage by bringing down 11 rebounds.

Returning Slammer Kate Fielding found form in her second match for the season, scoring 16 points while bringing down six rebounds.

On Sunday the Slammers hosted the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and after a dominant first three quarters it looked as if the home side would come away with an easy win.

Early in the game it was the Kelly Bastow show, with the guard coming off the bench to hit six three-pointers from eight attempts as the home side took control of the game.

But the Suns, down by 22 points at the last change, rallied in the final quarter to score 31 points to 12 and give the home side a scare.

But McCormick again was the hero, hitting clutch points late in the match to give the Slammers a 80-77 victory.

The double-header weekend looked as if it had taken its toll on the young Slammers, who slowed down in the last quarter and were unable to combat the fresh Sun stars.

Melissa Moyle (20 points) and Madeleine Dennis (20 points) turned on a last quarter to remember for the visitors, who put a scare through the Eaton Recreation Centre when they looked like snatching an unlikely victory.

Bastow (20 points) faded in the last half, while Fielding (15 points and eight rebounds) and McCormick (31 points) did their best to keep the Slammers alive.

In the end a jump shot late in the game from McCormick was enough to seal the win and keep the Slammers undefeated.

The Slammers again have a quick turnaround, when they travel to Mandurah on Thursday to take on the Mandurah Magic.
